Unreal Stylized Explosion

Here's a YT short of a VFX I made whit the flipbooks

Heres another shot.

In this idea, I worked in Unreal Engine 5 to create a grenade VFX with a 'Sonic' explosion. I integrated animations using Blueprints and solved challenges like setting up an Animation Montage for the Paragon character to play the attack sequence correctly.

For the visual effect, I designed an explosion divided into several layers: a lightning flipbook on a vertical plane, deformed 3D spheres to simulate smoke of the explosion, and a radial decal representing the shockwave. I used custom materials with LERP nodes to interpolate colors, emissive channels to simulate heat, and tileable textures for dissolution effects.

I also spent several hours creating flipbooks for the lightning and smoke effects, from the initial sketching to the final design.

It was a challenging but rewarding process where I explored new techniques and experimented with the engine’s tools.
